The term digital has become more common among businesses lately because we are witnessing a significant shift from traditional, outdated methods of marketing to more innovative ones.
This can range from digital product guides to digital assets.
So what exactly is a digital asset? We will explore this term in more detail in the upcoming sections.
According to Gartner, “a digital asset is anything that is stored digitally and is uniquely identifiable that organizations can use to realize value.”
Simply put, a digital asset is any type of content that exists in a digital format and provides value to individuals or businesses.
Digital assets come in many forms. Some of the most common types of digital assets are:
Images
Audio Files
Videos
Text
Documents
Typically, a company will store each digital asset they have within a digital asset management (DAM) system. A DAM enables companies to store all of their assets in one centralized location, which can provide numerous benefits.
There are numerous digital asset management companies out there. Some of the most common ones are:
Lumavate
Bynder
Brandfolder
Adobe
Canto
Investing in a DAM solution can be crucial to a business as it can help improve brand consistency by providing a single source of truth for all of your brand's assets.
As we discussed above, a digital asset can come in a variety of forms. Let’s review the digital asset examples:

Audio Files
Videos

Documents
Let’s take this a step further and look at how these digital assets related to items you may currently have within your organization:
Images
Product Images - These images can show the product from various angles and may also highlight some key features.
Maintenance and Cleaning Visuals - These images can be used to illustrate common maintenance tasks the customer may need to perform on the product.
Documents
User Guide - This document typically provides step-by-step instructions on how to install, operate, and maintain the product.
Troubleshooting Guide - This document offers solutions to common problems that the user may come across while using the product.
Videos
Instructional Videos - These videos typically provide instructions on how to install, operate, and maintain the product. The video can cover similar topics as the user guide but is done in a visual format.
Product Demos - Product demonstrations are powerful tools to showcase the features and benefits of the product and its special functions.
Now that we have discussed what digital assets are, and provided some examples, would a PDF be considered a digital asset? The answer is yes. Really anything that is available in a digital format is considered a digital asset. With this in mind, this means physical items are not considered digital assets.
It has been a common practice for many years for companies to create printed product catalogs. Another option was to create a PDF version that could then be linked to from their website. While these both can provide benefits to your customers, there is the risk that these documents are outdated the moment they are in your customer’s hands.
As a company, you likely have numerous digital assets without even realizing it. This can include images for a specific product, along with related videos and documents.
To begin creating digital assets, it is important to consider what type of asset(s) you want to create and how this information can benefit your customers. This can range from a video to a product image or even a digital product guide.
Once you have a list of the types of assets you want to create, you will then need to think about the purpose of each asset. For example, if you want to create an instructional video, what topics do you want to cover? Do you want to explain how to set up the product or provide product steps for important maintenance? By defining all of this early on, it will help to ensure you are creating digital assets that will be useful to your customers.
Now that you have created all of your digital assets, it would be a great idea to invest in a DAM solution. As we discussed above, there are numerous companies out there that provide this solution. One of the best options is Lumavate. Lumavate is a Product Experience Management (PXM) platform that has additional functionality including a DAM, PIM, and DXP.
